Modern Trend Report: Geometrics

Bold Geometric Patterns of yesteryear are back and sharper than ever.

Those of us that’ve been round for a few (ahem) decades now will notice styles from childhood suddenly ‘in vogue’ again.  The bold lines of geometric patterning are one of those remembered trends but in 2017, its revitalised and expressed through a fresh and modern twist.

Let’s be honest, wall-to-wall neutrals are just a bit…well…neutral. Add in some visual interest and excitement to your living room or kitchen by bringing in a geometric pattern that fits in with your existing colour scheme.  Be careful though to choose a print that isn’t going to overwhelm the size of your room and of course, choosing a pattern you love helps!

If budget is a bit tight then go for the accent role.  Focusing on one or two design elements that could do with a few pops of pattern and then making those the focus of your space.  Geometric designs do pack a certain punch when it comes to interior design so remember that a little can go a long way.

Introduce the geometric trend through accessories; easily done with pillows or blankets for your couch, at a patterned shade for your table lamps, or even bold wall art with a geometric edge.  The options here are endless!

The simpler and larger the pattern – the more refined look you’ll create.  The humble hexagon is a shape commonly used to create a modern edge in interiors and is often referred to as the ‘honeycomb effect’.

Geometrics are not just limited to patterned surfaces, furniture is getting also getting revamp – taking on strong angular metallic shapes to form a geometric design in a minimalist way.

To see how you can incorporate the geometric trend into your home; head along to New Zealand’s largest home and renovation exhibition, the Auckland Home Show on September 6-10 at the Auckland ASB Showgrounds, Greenlane.  Tickets available now at  www.aucklandhomeshow.co.nz
