Outdoor Rooms of the Future

These days, outdoor living goes beyond having just a deck or lawn and a barbecue

Outdoor rooms are the way of the future: what can you expect to see in your backyard?

Long-gone are the days when outdoor living simply involved a barbecue and outdoor table. Overseas trends are seeing new home builders and home renovators creating not only an outdoor living space, but the addition of an entire ‘outdoor room’ to their home.

Outdoor areas are now being zoned, with common inclusions being alfresco dining, vegetable gardens, children’s play areas and adults’ retreats.

Not only are home entertainers looking for ways to use their outdoor space in summer, but there has been an increasing demand for inclusions to help extend the use beyond just the warmer months.

With the trends overseas and at home, it’s becoming more common to see fully integrated outdoor kitchens complete with a bar fridge, home entertainment systems including outdoor cinemas and surround-sound systems, effective heating solutions and luxury outdoor couches and daybeds in everyday backyards.

Outdoor areas are becoming more sophisticated with kitchen elements, surround-sound and fireplaces.

So, what are the essentials to include in your outdoor room transformation?

A survey of residential trends found that more than 94 per cent of households are including a fireplace or outdoor heating system in their outdoor space. About 45 per cent of homes include television or projector screens and a huge 74 per cent are incorporating kitchen elements such as counters and sinks.

With the warmer months soon approaching, how will you use your outdoor space?
